A man who claimed to have the divine power to help childless women conceive was arrested on Thursday for sexually assaulting a housewife and cheating her and her husband. Yogesh Kupekar (42), posing as a baba (godman), would make couples have sex in his presence, while he would chant mantras to bless them with children. He operated from Goregaon. A young couple from Thane, yearning for a child since their marriage in 2013, fell for Kupekar's assurances. Husband and wife, both 32, went for their first session with him in May last year, inspector R Sawant of Thane's Vartak Nagar police station told TOI.
Kupekar told the couple he would perform a ritual, where they will be remarried, after which they will have to consummate their marriage afresh under his gaze.On July 24, Kupekar visited the couple's home in Vartak Nagar, and announced that the date was auspicious for the ritual to be performed so that the wife is able to conceive. After making them have sex in front of him, he told the husband to wait outside the room so that he could perform some rituals where only the wife could be present. After that, he sexually assaulted the woman, Sawant said. The couple filed a police complaint against him. Kupekar was nabbed from his Panvel home, where he had shifted two months ago.
