1 TB internal plus 500GB external hard disc open problem

I have 1-TB internal hard disc in my PC. Now I want to connect with 500 GB external hard disc in my PC with my USB port. Is it possible ? 500 GB external hard disc will open?Please advice me. Because myself want to transfer file from 1 TB internal hard disc to 500 GB external hard disc
