Yesteryear actor Ranganath hangs himself in Hyderabad
Veteran actor Ranganath, 66, committed suicide by hanging at his residence at Kavadiguda on Saturday evening. Police said loneliness and depression could be the reasons behind his extreme step.
Gandhi Nagar police said the incident came to light around 5 pm when two representatives of a cultural organisation from Malkajgiri went to his house to invite him for a felicitation function. However, they found the door locked from inside and there was no response despite repeated knocks.
"As there was no response, the visitors, suspecting that something was amiss, informed Ranganath's daughter Neeraja, who resides nearby. Neeraja with the help of a few others prised opened the door and found Ranganath hanging from the ceiling in the kitchen,'' assistant commissioner of police (Chikkadpally) J Narasaiah told STOI.
According to police, the actor did not leave any suicide note, but just wrote the word 'destiny' on the wall. The writing on the wall was found by Clues team. He also a left message saying that his bank balance be given to his domestic help, Meenakshi. Ranganath had been residing alone at a rented independent house for the past two years.
Ever since his wife passed away in 2009, the actor slipped into depression. On several occasions, he told his daughter and friends that his days were 'numbered'. His last message was to his friend, B Devadas, through an SMS, saying `goodbye' at 3.30 pm. Police suspect that he might have hanged himself between 4 pm and 4.30 pm. In the morning, he had called up his daughter Neeraja and informed that the maid did not turn up for work as Meenakshi used to work for both of them.
Ranganath had acted in over 300 films during his career spanning 46 years. Born Tirumala Sundara Sri Ranganath, he was a ticket collector in the railways before he started acting in films. He acted as hero in as many as 50 films and as villain in 60 movies. In several other films, he donned character roles.
Ranganath was born in Chennai and had a degree from Sri Venkateshwara University, Tirupati. He got his first break in 1969 in the film 'Buddimantudu'. It was in 1974 that he was chosen to play the lead role in the film 'Chandana'.
The actor endeared himself to the audience through his sensitive portrayal of various roles. Some of his most popular films include 'Intinti Ramayanam', 'Zamindaru Gari Ammayyi', 'Panthulamma', 'Andame Anandam', 'Mavuri Devatha', 'Kondaveeti Donga', 'Thayaramma Bangarayya', 'Rama Chiluka', 'Khaidi', 'America Ammayi', 'Devathalara Deevinchandi' and 'Sriramadasu'.
Apart from acting in several serials, he also directed a film titled 'Moguds Pellams'. Ranganath is survived by two daughters and a son. His wife had passed away some years ago.
