[Nothing new there. A lot of people knows it in detail, but as some members suggested me to start a discussion on this topic, I am doing it. I will try to do it as much as I can.
If you (any reader of this topic) feel that I am missing something to discuss, or some more explanation is needed, feel totally free to let me know. I will rectify it.]

PART 1:
BASIC DISCUSSIONS ABOUT THE LOOK, FEEL AND THE APPEARANCE OF THE DESKTOP.

Desktop in windows based computers is a system folder, C:\Users\<Username>\Desktop. It has a very important role in the windows GUI (Graphical User Interface) as it sits in front of the user’s eyes and provides the path of interaction between the user and the computer.

Basically a desktop interface has three important parts. These are
Wallpaper;
Taksbar (also called superbar for windows 7);
Program icons and shortcuts.
Moreover, there are desktop gadgets too.

Let us start our discussion on those topics one by one.

Wallpaper:

The most important part of a desktop customization. A nice looking cool wallpaper can make the entire environment look vibrant at its own. The default wallpaper comes with windows 7 (situated in C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\Windows\img0.jpg) is very nice, indeed. But it does not feel good with the passage of time, so changing the wallpaper on a regular basis becomes a must.

We can set any image as wallpaper, by right clicking on it and “set as desktop background”.

Some places to collect the coolest wallpapers are:
Computer wallpapers / Wallbase.cc
4walled
WallpaperStock
Wallpapers at DeviantArt
And many more.

The fun of arranging wallpapers in windows 7 is the custom desktop slideshow.
From Windows KB article: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/w...und-slide-show
(There is a video in that page too, to view it you need to enable Silverlight in your browser).

Taskbar:

Taskbar is the bar that sits at the bottom of the desktop, by default. It is called Superbar for windows 7, too.
It has three parts.
The start button;
The area for pinned icons and running programs; and
The notification area.
Though the taskbar sits at the bottom by default, you can place it at any the four sides.
Right click on it, uncheck “lock the taskbar” and drag it to the place where you want it. When placed, check the “lock the taskbar” option back.

By default, the taskbar uses large sized icons. You can use small icons there, too. Right click on the taskbar and click on the “properties”.
Then Check the “use small icon” option there.
If you want a wider taskbar than the default one, uncheck “lock the taskbar”, place the mouse curser at the top edge of it, the cursor will change to a “both sided arrow”.
Now click and drag it as big as you want. When done, “lock the taskbar” back.

To pin any program on the taskbar, just run the program. When the program’s icon is appeared on the taskbar, right click on it and “pin this program to taskbar).

Program Shortcuts:

When you install a program, a shortcut to that program is placed on the desktop. Though it is totally on the user to allow the shortcut to be placed there or not; but it gives an easy access to that program to run.

The user can have three different display sizes for the desktop shortcut. Small, Medium and Large. Even the user can hide all the desktop shortcuts in a single go. All those options are available via right click on the desktop and “View”.
In part 2, taskbar customization will be discussed in details. Even more to come gradually. Thanks for reading. :) 
