MANGALORE: An apparent penchant for 'selfie' at a scenic spot on the railway track at Nehru Nagar in Puttur turned fatal for a student of Vivekananda College of Engineering and Technology. The incident took place around 2.30pm on Sunday. However, the incident was reported late to the authorities concerned, railway police here said.

Railway police identified the victim as Varsha Alva, 19, second year BE student at the college, and injured as Rachana, 19. While Varsha is resident of Derebail in the city, Rachana is resident of Vittla. Varsha, Rachana and four other students had gone to a popular eatery in Puttur and were returning to the hostel when the incident took place. They had to cross the railway track to reach the hostel, Tharanath K, police inspector, railway police said.

Observing that the spot where the incident took place is along a curved stretch of the track, Tharanath said the adjoining hillocks sometimes make it difficult for one to spot an oncoming train. The Subrahmanya-Puttur-Mangalore passenger coming that way knocked down Varsha and Rachana. While Varsha succumbed to injuries before she could be taken at a hospital in Puttur, Rachana with more grievous injuries was shifted to a private hospital here.

Incidentally, photos of the group of students taken minutes before the fatal accident at the eatery and circulated widely on Whatsapp showed them in a cheerful mood. The impact of the train hitting Varsha from the rear was such that her entire skull was ripped apart, police said, adding that on request from her parents, the post-mortem was conducted at Government Wenlock Hospital. The condition of Rachana is better, Tharanath noted.
