Worli police recently filed a first information report (FIR) against a man for attempting suicide after he jumped off the Bandra-Worli Sea Link but was rescued. This is the first time that an FIR has been filed for a suicide bid from the iconic bridge.
Andheri businessman Rajesh Sharma (32) told cops he took the extreme step on Sunday as he had suffered losses of Rs 65 lakh in his online money exchange business.
"Chances of the MSRDC taking any security measures are slim, as it had replied to a PIL in the high court that it is not responsible for suicides. We, therefore, decided to register an FIR to deter those who intend to use the sea link to kill themselves," said S A Jain, senior inspector, Worli police.
In the past nine months, eight people have jumped off the sea link. In all these cases, police had registered accidental death reports. Sharma, too, leaped off the bridge around 4am but a few alert fishermen rescued him. They then handed him over at the Worli police station. He was booked under the Indian Penal Code's Section 309 on attempted suicide.
Like in other sea link suicide cases, Sharma travelled in his car to the bridge and got off. He left his Four Bungalows, Andheri (West), home around 3am and stopped on the sea link at its Worli end. "Fishermen who were at the spot saved him. Sharma revealed that he took the step as he had suffered a loss," said Jain. "He had incurred losses in his online currency trading over the past eight months and was completely broke, with no money left to repay around 35 clients," said the police. Cops got in touch with his family at Andheri and found he had left a suicide note at home.
